Hex editing Java bytecode throwing ClassFormatError -

while researching java, bytecode editing in particular, stumbled across this tutorial, guides through steps of editing compiled java .class files hex editor. intrigued, gave go.

i made sure typed in correctly, checked , double-checked, replaced right bytes in hex editor, etc. everything's ok.

the first thing noticed hex dump different his, however, expected this, different java versions yield different results.

after inputting correct bytes (replacing hacking java bytecode! l33t hax0r bro, , 3 occurrences of 00 16 00 0e), saved file, , ran it. however, instead of getting output of l33t hax0r bro, writer of tutorial did, got rather ugly error:

the answer question suggests classformaterror bug in java 8 compiler. using java 8, however, answer states bug fixed in 8u60+. using 8u65.

in end, how can edit .class file hex editor desired output?

additional system specs:

• fedora 23
• javac -version: javac 1.8.0_65

• java -version:

you're supposed replace length field of string modified. that's 2 bytes in front of string modified, other instances of 00 16 unrelated parts of classfile, , editing them turned garbage.

on side note, highly recommend using assembler. i've created , modified classes directly in hex editor before, , it's painstaking process that's easy mess if know you're doing. furthermore, it's pretty pointless nowadays, because krakatau assembler , disassembler let create , modify arbitrary classfiles in human readable format. (if find jvm supports krakatau doesn't, please file bug)
